Straight-laced
Princeton University admissions officer Portia Nathan is caught off-guard when
she makes a recruiting visit to an alternative high school overseen by her
former college classmate, the free-wheeling John Pressman. With her vast
experience with the coaching, consoling, and criticism involving Princeton
College's admission, she is caught off guard when Pressman, requests her to pay
a visit to the affable Quest School, of which he teaches in and partly looks
over. After exposing Portia to some of the more outspoken and freewheeling
Quest students' impressions of college, he takes her to meet the interesting
and rather unconventional Jeremiah Balakian who is a child prodigy. Later,
Portia's longtime boyfriend Mark breaks up with her, after complications
involving the pregnancy of one of his english coworkers. After some awkward and
romantic scenes with Pressman she arranges for Jeremiah to visit Princeton.
Pressman learns that Portia had a secret adoption when she was younger, and
implies that Jeremiah is possibly her son. Eventually, Jeremiah's miserable
transcript is read, and he is deemed unfit to attend. However, Portia, in an act
that greatly dangers her position, allows Jeremiah entrance into the school,
knowing that Princeton cannot reveal such scandal.
